If the student will observe nature in his drawings then he will be successful as an artist. There are many that love to draw but apparently have no talent; you will see this in boys who do not finish their drawings with shading [having failed to notice the light and shadow on the subject they are drawing.]

The aspiring artist should first:

Learn perspective.

Then study the proportions of objects.

Next he may copy the work of a great artist to understand the use of the above.

Then observe from nature, to confirm by practice the rules he has learned.

See for a time the works of various masters.

Then get the habit of putting his art into practice and work.
